Flocks of beautiful flamingos live since November in Alyki Wetland on Samos Island, near the popular (during summer) sandy beach of Psili Ammos!
They will remain there, among other wild birds, until spring, when they will depart for their next destination. The flamingos are nomads of the Mediterranean and visit Samos during winter months to rest of their immigration journey from north to south.
They find shelter to build their nests in the wetland of Alyki (a salt evaporation pond of the past), because during winter the small lake fills with water and thus is an ideal retreat for them.
Flamingos charm thanks to the excellent pink color of their wings and their stylish, rangy silhouette of nearly 1,30 m. The birds stand on one leg when the rest.
